Does God like fun? At youth group tonight, we started by celebrating Wanqing's 20th birthday. Then we played the Winking Game, an interesting activity involving a circle of chairs with one empty, and a person standing behind each chair. The people standing must stare at the back of the neck of the person in their chair. The person with an empty chair winks at someone seated. The seated person must dart out of his/her chair before the person standing behind it can tag them. It's exhausting, and hilarious—and we discovered HaiMei is unable to either tag or run without shrieking!
Then I handed out Bibles and concordances, and asked the young people to prove to me that God approves of fun. After all, I pointed out, sin and end times, the expectation of purity and holiness—these are serious things. Surely we should turn away from fun and laughter. Prove me wrong, I said, or we'll have to stay totally serious in youth group the rest of the year.
They did a wonderful job of proving to me that God not only allows but loves joy and laughter. I can give only a few verses: God fills our mouths with laughter (Job), we are to rejoice with great joy (Nehemiah), joy is a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians), we are to shout for joy (Psalms), and a joyful heart is good medicine (Psalms).
