Spring break at the beach The youth group was handed plastic leis this evening, and we gathered on colorful plastic tablecloth/beach towels for our spring break on the beach. Half the group just finished break; the others are on break next week. So it seemed a good evening for a celebration of sorts.
I asked the kids for a Bible connection, and they suggested fishing, Peter walking on the water, and Jesus fixing a meal for His disciples after the Resurrection. That was the story in my mind, because it followed so closely after Easter. So we read the story and talked about it. And I handed out bagel chips (bread) and colored goldfish crackers (fish). And Gatorade.
I had MoonSand for them, two big containers, as well as small plastic buckets and three bags of shells. Not enough, it turned out. They split themselves into two groups, and we had a sand castle building contest. I required they have a story with a moral lesson to go with their creation.
The process was hilarious! Alex blended the colors (red, blue, and white). Chris made a soft blue for the moat around the castle. We tried to keep the sand on the tablecloth, with some success ...
And the final result? Karen, HaiMei, Ruthie, and LeHao built a beautiful castle, decorated with shells, and with flower trees made from a lei. It was a work of art, but their story was simple: the beach blew up and came together again.
Wanqing, Alex, Sam, and Chris had sand everywhere, with shells as machine guns and spikes on the walls. Their story was the world attacking the Christians, and sometimes landing a good hit (that's because one of the towers was collapsing from its own weight), but God's word will prevail.
We got everything cleaned up, and I suggested they send the sand and shells home with the kids who have little brothers and sisters. Then I left, and they started a game of "beach volleyball" (which seemed about to morph into kickball) in the big room. What fun!
