Kingdom of heaven It was such a good lesson plan! We've been looking at some of the parables in Matthew, both in youth group and in women's Bible study. And many of them start, "The kingdom of God is like ..." So I thought I'd have my youth build a kingdom, and then we'd draw parallels to the kingdom of God, and then we'd have a better understanding of the parables.
This is still my goal. However ... I brought in half-size poster board tonight, plus tape, glue, scissors, markers, pens, tagboard, and paper. "Build a kingdom," I told the kids. And I started happily making a sign: The Kingdom of God, complete with 3-D rolled-paper towers with banners flying from them.
The rest of our kingdom? Well, we have ...
~~a beach, with a palm tree, a surf board, and turtles
~~an orange garden, with orange flowers, orange grass, and orange juice in the fountain
~~a princess's bedroom, with a gigantic pink bed and a ... well, I'm told it's half rabbit, half dog, and half lizard
~~an armory, with guards, an elaborate laser security system, cannons, and fighter planes
~~a yellow brick road, with helpful directional signs: McDonald's, chicken wings, free church
~~a delightful, stone church with stained glass windows
~~a Build-a-Bear store with a humungous bear outside it
~~a tri-fold scene, with stars and moon, sunrise, and butterfly.
Now all I have to do is figure out how to relate these to the kingdom of God ...
