Last straw … Tonight at youth group, I handed out 400 flex-straws, 750 paper clips, and several pairs of scissors. "Using nothing but the straws and paper clips to build with, make the highest, independently standing tower you can. You may work together or alone."
And what fun we all had! Sam immediately knew how he wanted to approach his tower, and worked alone. He was the ultimate winner, with a tower about four feet high, with an "antenna" on top of that.
Chris, Chris, and LeHao worked together, with LeHao as the primary architect. Their tower was a hodge-podge but fairly solid, as little Chris invented tripod-claws to hold it to the carpet.
The girls worked together for a while, then Nancy and Karen broke off to do their own thing. Karen ended up with an artistic, swaying bit of modern art that would grace a park. Nancy used columns of decreasing size to make a high, thin thing. And Wanqing and Haimei worked and struggled, tried this and that, and ended up with a rickety looking piled of squares that LeHao and big Chris were unable to blow over! Theirs was second in height.
We spent the entire period working on these, so the Bible application lesson will wait till next week. :-D
