“against You only have I sinned …” I'm working on a lesson for my youth group this Friday. I want to show them the enormity of David's statement in Psalm 51: "Against You, You only, have I sinned."
I mean, this is David—the shepherd boy, who fought the lions and bears; the young man who played the harp and wrote songs to the Creator; the brave lad who killed Goliath, refused to harm Saul, and befriended Jonathan; the king who was "a man after God's own heart," who sought out Saul's grandson and offered him a home. David, the all-powerful king, annointed by the Lord, chosen to lead the line of the Messiah. David, who saw another man's wife, got her pregnant, and killed her husband.
David, who had all the blessings, all the "luck." David, who harmed Bathsheba, her husband, the commander of the army, the soldiers, and the entire country.
David, who, after all that, said sincerely, "Lord, You are the one I have sinned against."
How to show that to the kids ... how to show that to myself! What an amazing statement! And yet, when I injure you, I am also injuring Him. Which is bigger?
