Döppelganger? That’s not exactly the term I’m looking for … I wonder what an antonymn for döppelganger would be.
To help keep my balance, I watch my feet as I step into my pants. And I think, “Whose feet are those?” It’s a passing thought, as I quickly recall that I now have painted toenails—how odd!—but it’s my first reaction as I get dressed each day.
Up about two this morning, I caught shadowy movement in the bathroom mirror and thought, “Who’s that?” I didn’t recognize the profile at all—the result of a radical haircut. The whole head seems strange to me; even the face is almost unfamiliar.
This is a gift from my friend Anne Agovino, whom I’ve been visiting in St. Louis. She felt I should have a new look, to go with the changes the Lord is implementing in my heart and mind through therapy. She took me to her hairdresser, Franco, who removed several miles of hair and rearranged the remainder.
I asked him, as he was competently turning me into a stranger, how he decided what style would be best. His answer reminded me of something I read (and can no longer find) about someone asking a sculptor how he managed to carve a life-like horse from a block of wood. The sculptor thought a moment and responded simply, “I see the horse in the wood. Then I cut away everything that isn’t part of the horse.”
Franco’s answer to me was similar: “I look at your face and your hair. I cut off the hair that isn’t doing anything for you.” He went on to discuss knowledgeably heaviness and lightness, adding height rather than width, how fine my hair was … but I had stopped at the first lines.
Surely that’s what the Lord does—He sees through the persona, the façade, to the real me inside. And then He works to free that inside me so others can see her, also.
I notice my reflection and am startled; that’s not how I see myself. Nor do I see at all the person the Lord sees in me. But He is working with me to recognize and appreciate His craftsmanship in creating me, and I hope this hairstyle is a step in that direction.
