Hot and windy I’ve been camped about half an hour, and the inside temp is already down to 91°—that’s a good sign, don’t you think? I don’t think I’ve been in New Mexico since I was eight and we did the southwest corner of the country on our way to DisneyLand. I stopped at the Visitor Center and filled out their survey; my “free gift” of gratitude was a copy of the New Mexico magazine—rah. I began seeing pronghorn antelope along the road, just like in Wyoming. The rest of the scenery is pretty Wyoming-ish, too: flat and brown and tufted with bushes, cattle, and pronghorns. At the Capulin Volcano National Monument entrance, I saw three men attempting to take a picture of themselves at the sign. Their problem was that the wind was blowing the camera off the hood of their truck! So we exchanged favors; I took their picture, and one of them took mine. Capulin has a 31-foot limit; I’m 30 feet. So I asked the rangers, and they were extremely dubious. There are some really tight S-curves, and if there’s traffic in the other direction, you can’t see around the curves, and … One of the rangers suggested I hitch a ride with another tourist. So I waited for a set of tourists in a car (the first batch were on motorcycles), with a woman to ask. And the Lord, with kindness and grace, sent me Christians! They’re from Amarillo, and we had a great conversation going around terribly tight S-curves to the top of the volcano. Once there, I decided even worse than the road would have been figuring out how to turn around in the parking lot! My friends walked part of the rim trail, and I stayed at the top and took pictures, as well as sitting in a shady shelter and singing, “Mountains bow down and the seas will roar at the sound of Your name!” I’ll bet the mountain roared when the volcano went off! I finally entered Texas, where the winds were so bad I saw a hawk flying above the highway, wings outspread, going backwards! The outdoors kept getting hotter, and my vehicle AC was not keeping up. I kept turning the fan higher and higher, and the air was certainly cooler than outside, and refreshing, but not impressive. You know what is impressive, though? My little TomTom friend! She directs me beautifully! I’m tickled with her! And with my Amarillo KOA, which gave me a site and sold me a hamburger so I don’t have to turn the AC off to use the microwave. I decided to bag Palo Dura State Park—too hot to breathe, and another 30-some miles south of here. Maybe in the morning … Share This Blog:
