Student advocacy … It's been quite a week for this advocate! I go to school meetings with parents who need help working with the special ed system or personnel in the public schools. In the past week, I've had three meetings—and two of them have been resounding successes for all concerned! Isn't God good?
The first was Erie High School, where a parent needed help with a transition IEP (that's the federally mandated paperwork for a child with special needs). The District representative and the special ed teacher were both open and devoted to putting together the best plan for the kid. I got to just sit back and enjoy the process—fun!
The second was at Evergreen High School, where the counselor and principal worked willingly with the parents to make a temporary plan to help their son. Such a pleasure to work with professionals who care about kids!
And the third ... no, I won't mention the school, nor even the district. Suffice it to say I was disappointed in the special educator and the regular teacher, who seemed much more interested in molding the child to fit the way they like to teach, then in adapting their teaching to meet the child's needs.
But two out of three good ones ... that's a record! Praise the Lord!
