Worms

The concrete is cleansed of all footprints and bright chalk;

The clouds are wrung dry and the gutters abound.

Where are they going--the worms on my sidewalk?

Escaping the water for fear they might drown?

Scientists tell us the earthworms they learn about

Come to the surface to travel and mate.

Moisture allows them to breathe as they turn about,

And they don't want to be turned into bait.

I'm sure that the scientists know all the reasons

The worms on my sidewalk march out and deploy.

But I think they celebrate change of the seasons:

I think they're dancing, just dancing for joy.
