Oral Spelling Bee

A parent commented, after the Bee Monday, that people who think watching the Super Bowl is tense have no idea what watching a spelling bee is like! You are rooting for each child, thinking the letters across the room at them. As they miss a letter, you are in despair right along with them. And the ones who miss and correct (against the rules) break your heart even more! Of course, if just watching is that hard, imagine being the woman behind the microphone, having to say, "I'm so sorry, but that is incorrect." Tears me apart! We did have one funny little girl who, in the first round, said confidently, "Ball. B-A-T. Ball." I asked, "You just spelled bat. Can do you ball for me?" And she did. Whoo-hoo! Next round, there she was again: "Cold. C-O-O-L. Cold." "Um, that's cool. Can you do cold?" No, she couldn't. Sigh. The kids at Elk Creek Elementary did a great job though, and with a list much harder than any we've had before. Such fun, to be with a group of kids and school personnel who value spelling and words!
