9 ladies dancing … Today is the 9th day of Christmas—did your true love get their nine ladies dancing?
Yes, the twelve days of Christmas are the twelve days after Christmas, from December 26 through January 6. That's why Jan. 6 is Twelfth Night (think Shakespeare). It's a European tradition, because the kings brought the presents, and the kings got to the Baby's house late. (About two years late, theologians and scholars, think: they came to a house, rather than the stable, and the Child is called a "young child" rather than a "baby.")
January 6 is the traditional day for taking down the Christmas tree and all the decorations, too. I couldn't wait on my tree and outside lights, though. The two high school girls who help me—well, BobbiJo fell and broke both her thumbs; Brittany was sledding, and sprained her arm on a pole. And I'm not physically able to get the tree out of the house, nor to pull my lighted figures out of the ground (much less the hardpacked snow!) and put them away. So, when Brittany's big brother Reed came over to haul away some "biomass" (translation: limbs and grass), I had him take the tree with him. And while he was here, he took down my figures, too. The rest of the outside lights are still up, but I've unplugged them.
So, Christmas is over. Except, of course, that Christmas is never over! The Savior is born, lives, dies, and rises again—in our hearts, in our day-to-day lives, in infinity. I can celebrate His birth ... His death and resurrection ... His love, any and all times!
