Registered trademark I don't get it. I try, but I just cannot figure out why spammers do their thing! I get oodles of spam on this blog—mostly porn, but also medication information and, occasionally, used car and truck sales. I suppose that's because my name is Dodge. But ... what's the point? No one's going to come to my blog to find porn; it's too easy to find in more traditional places. Same for Tramadol, or pickup trucks. So, what in the world do they think they're accomplishing? Do they get pleasure just from the knowledge that they're driving me insane?
I do feel awfully sorry for the people at Hormel, though. My Daddy was an intellectual properties lawyer, and I learned quite young about trademarks that get lost. Aspirin, for example, is still a registered brand name in England; in the US, it's become generic. Coke® fights hard to keep their trademark from being used for general cola drinks, or even (in the south) any soft drink. Kodak® almost lost their name to "camera," and Kleenex® is still frantically fighting to retain theirs. The list goes on and on. But poor Hormel, who made a perfectly acceptable canned ham loaf—and now find their trademark used as a disgusting internet nuisance! They print little ads in the writing magazines, pleading (futilely, of course) with authors not to use spam as a generic term.
Language changes, but still ... it must be frustrating!
