Just moosin’ around …
‘Twas the night before Christmas: I’ll now introduce
That no creature was stirring, except for a moose.
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care;
The moose nosed against them and tripped on a chair.
His antlers were tangled in ivy and holly;
His snort of disgust sounded not a bit jolly!
He pawed with his hoofs … and the tree came a-tumbling!
He fell through the window, kicking and grumbling.
Away to the forest he flew like a flash,
With candy canes flying, a wreath for a sash,
Tinsel-wrapped antlers with stockings a-dangling,
Light strings and moose ears inextric’bly tangling,
A star on his nose, chocolate-flavored hoof-prints,
Ornaments in his hair, and breath smelling of mints.
And I heard him exclaim, e’er he charged out of sight:
“Happy Christmas to all; pity have on my plight!”
But then, in a twinkling, the forest arose
And cheered our poor moose with the star on his nose!
“We thank you for bringing the joys of the season—
Now, tell us, why do this? Whatever’s the reason?
Why candy and tinsel and lights and so forth?
Why reindeer and Santa? Should we all go north?”
The moose shook his antlers (with stockings all swinging):
“It isn’t the point, just the songs and gift-bringing.
The whole foo-fer-ah should remind us of Jesus,
Who came here to bring us to Him, as He pleases!
It’s really His birthday; it’s really His joy
That brings all this stuff to girls, grown-ups, and boys!”
And the animals said, as they cleared off the moose
And hung all the stuff on each fir tree and spruce,
“We’re glad you found out all the background and reason
When you went a-visiting this Christmas season!”
And through the deep forest they gamboled and swirled.
As they called, “Ho-ho-ho!” and sang, “Joy to the World!”
