Brigadoon? One of my favorite musicals as a child was "Brigadoon," about a magical town in Scotland that only existed one day every few years (10, maybe)? I apparently confused it with Shangri La, which existed all the time but where everything was perfect, because I see Brigadoon as having perfect weather, perfect ambiance.
Like Boulder ... Last Wednesday I left the house just before 6 a.m. to go down to school, about an hour south of here. I was in a sweater, because it wasn't very cold, and the roads were quiet and dry. The traffic report on KPOF, however, told a different story—Gordy was reporting multiple accidents due to the terrible driving conditions ... glare ice ... allow extra time ... drive defensively ... the snow is covering ice ...
I kept looking out my window, wondering if I was in the Twilight Zone or something. Then, a ways before Golden, I finally struck snow. By Golden proper I was on ice and going 35 mph on the highway. I kept passing accidents, skid marks ... where had this come from?
By the time I left school, everything had melted and it was a lovely day. And there had apparently been no snow at all in Boulder!
Brigadoon, right?
This morning I left about 8:30 a.m. for choir practice. Within a block my windshield was iced over from the sleet. By the time I got to church, the sidewalk and parking lot were treacherously slippery. By 9, people were trickling in, talking about US 36 being closed from Westminster on, rollover accidents, regular accidents, terrible driving and walking conditions! Rehearsal was over at 11: the sun was out, the walks and roads were clear.
