A bookish day Lady likes life to be consistent and predictable. So this morning she woke me at 5:30—time to get up, Mama! I had nothing pressing till 11:30, but she is not the keeper of my calendar, only the keeper of the alarm. And up we got. However, after breakfast and the morning papers, I went back to bed (and Lady was happy to accompany me).
Lying half-asleep, about 8:15, I was trying to figure out if there was any reason at all to get out of bed. What was on my agenda ... oh! Out of bed I popped—today was the release date for the new Mitford book!
I'm now about halfway through Jan Karon's Back to Holly Springs, and it's delightful. It's not at all what I had expected—I thought it would be a straightforward narrative of Father Tim's childhood, but instead it's more retrospective, as the adult Father Tim visits his childhood home. But fascinating!
From Barnes Noble I went to Boulder's Family Christian store, to buy Halloween candy with Scripture verses on the wrappers. And to discuss a Bret Lott book I've given up on. My friend Susan reminded me that people who haven't been "there" read things very differently, so I'm not feeling too guilty for not liking this book.
I'm also re-reading Brennan Manning's Abba's Child, which I find life-changing each time I work through it. It causes a paradigm shift in me, which is difficult, but positive.
Books ... one of the ways the Lord speaks to me each day.
