Spring holidays At supper last house church, the subject of the origins of Easter traditions came up. We talked about how the date of Easter is fixed (first Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal equinox). We talked about fertility rites and symbols, harvest and planting gods and goddesses, and pagan holidays "taken over" by Christianity. It was all sounding a bit sordid to me.
But I offered, How handy that all the fertility traditions, which are focused on new life, come in the spring, which "just happens" to be when Jesus died and rose again. How handy that winter holidays, dealing with the need for light and warmth in a cold season with short days, "just happen" to be when we celebrate the birth of Jesus, Who is the light of the world.
I went on, "Gosh, you'd almost think God knew what He was doing, that He planned it all!"
After a startled pause, everyone laughed. But it's true ... there are no coincidences in God's sovereignty!
