Lion and the Lamb … In worship this morning, we were singing Chris Tomlin's "How Great Is Our God." And our worship pastor, Tim Schoeneweis, commented how he loves the phrase, "the Lion and the Lamb." Which started me thinking ...
First, I focused on the imagery itself. "Lion" is Aslan, and before that the Lion of Judah. King of beasts. Ruler of the forest. Smart, and handsome, and a family man. Dangerous but impressive. Okay, and lamb? Sacrifice. Weak, helpless, stupid, cute. Absolute opposites, combined in our Lord.
Then I superimposed, over my mental picture of the Lion and the Lamb lying down together, a picture of my own lion and lamb together. But ... which is which?
Lady has a badly deformed jaw that makes her look as if she's snarling (I tell her it's a beautiful smile). People in campgrounds tend to be afraid of her until I explain. Dolphin is utterly adorable; rolled on his back with paws tucked under his chin, he is terminally cute.
And yet, Lady has no aggression in her at all. She is completely passive, totally submissive, the absolute omega animal in any group. Dolphin tends to be vicious, is dominant beyond belief, takes over and enforces his will with wile and claw. Appearances are—no surprise—deceiving.
As was the image of Jesus on the cross, helpless, dying ... and saving the world in doing so. Lion and the lamb ... yeah!
